Her parents traveled to India to look for her. Her brother feared she’d been kidnapped. But Saturday—a week after she went missing—the body of Rhode Island native and MIT graduate student Kaitlin Goldstein, 28, was found in a ravine in India, the AP reports. Her parents say she apparently slipped on loose rock while jogging and fell several hundred feet off a cliff. "The death of someone so young and promising is a terrible loss; we should all take time to reach out to those around us," MIT officials said in a statement. Goldstein had been in India since June 7 for a workshop on energy and development in the remote northern region of Ladakh.
MIT News reports that the competitive runner left for the mountain trail at around 6am local time on June 14; a search of the summit was launched around 8:45am after she didn't return. Soon, local police, the Intelligence Bureau of India, the American embassy in New Dehli, the US State Department, the FBI, and a security firm hired by MIT joined the search. Goldstein, who was pursuing her doctorate in architecture, intended to stay in India after the workshop to install solar panels at a Buddhist monastery. Goldstein’s brother said she was "really passionate about helping poorer places out." (More India stories.)
