And now a story sure to fill you with confidence in your local pharmacist. A Houston-area man is suing CVS, claiming that a pharmacy screw-up blinded him in one eye. Claudis Alston, 65, went to the doctor in 2012 with a case of pink eye and got a prescription for eye drops, KHOU reports, but he says the pharmacy accidentally gave him ear drops instead. When he used them, he felt a surge of pain and rushed to the emergency room, but it was too late to save the eye.
Alston has an extensive criminal record, KPRC reports, but his lawyer says the screw-up is well documented enough that credibility shouldn't be a concern. While the package the pharmacy gave Alston was labeled "EAR SOLN," the instructions said, "INSTILL 3 DROPS IN EACH EYE TWICE DAILY." So far, CVS hasn't responded to the lawsuit, the lawyer said, and it declined to comment for the news organizations. Based on Texas law, the most Alston can be awarded is $250,000.
