Could better spelling have prevented the Boston Marathon bombing? A soon-to-be released congressional report finds that the US missed multiple chances to detain Tamerlan Tsarnaev after receiving warnings from Russian authorities, NBC reports. In July 2012, less than a year before the bombing, Tsarnaev returned to the US from Dagestan, where he is believed to have received jihad training. His name was on a watchlist warning that he might be armed and dangerous and should be detained, but sources say he wasn't stopped because his name had been entered as "Tsarnayev."
The FBI opened and closed an investigation after receiving a warning from Russian authorities but apparently didn't reopen after a second warning was received. The report is "is not blaming the FBI," a congressional staffer says, but is "looking at processes and filling holes." Separately, investigators have released a report clearing an FBI agent of wrongdoing in the death of an acquaintance of Tsarnaev's shot dead while being questioned over a triple murder both men are believed to have committed, reports the New York Times.
