A California court has extended control over the affairs of troubled pop star Britney Spears to her father until February 14, reports the Los Angeles Times. The judge also appointed a physician to report on Spears' mental condition at a hearing next week. The singer is currently at UCLA Medical Center undergoing a 14-day evaluation and treatment following months of increasingly erratic behavior. A lawyer claiming to represent Britney challenged the order, saying it would cause her "further distress."

A court-appointed attorney who met with Spears in the hospital said he doesn't believe she understands the nature of the proceedings and "lacks the capacity" to hire a private attorney, according to People. The continued conservatorship extends James Spears significant control over his daughter's medical care, assets and home. Lawyers for Spears told the court he only wants to protect his daughter and her assets until she recovers. (More Britney Spears stories.)
