Tech Milestone: Apple Outsells All Windows PCs

Apple has an industry milestone to celebrate: In the fourth quarter, its computers outsold PCs that run on Windows for the first time globally, reports analyst Benedict Evans. He's not talking Macs only—Apple computers include iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads. The development illustrates the "scale of mobile," he writes. "Apple limits itself only to the high end of the mobile market but still sells more units than the whole PC industry."

It's downright "historic," writes Blair Hanley Frank at Geekwire, and all the more impressive considering that Apple didn't come close to Microsoft sales in 2009. At Quartz, blogger Christopher Mims thinks the trend is only going to accelerate. "The tasks we used to conduct on PCs are now being carried out on an ever-expanding variety of other devices, pretty much all of them mobile," he writes.
