Indie darling Greta Gerwig is coming to the small screen as the star of How I Met Your Dad, the upcoming How I Met Your Mother spin-off. But reaction has been, well, not great. The Wire actually sums it up as "outraged," and explains that most critics of the move see it as "a lazy cash grab" by Gerwig, star of Frances Ha. The Daily Beast's headline basically sums up the backlash: "Greta Gerwig Stoops to TV." And critic Jordan Hoffman got even harsher on Twitter: "Greta Gerwig may've just secured her financial future but officially became of no interest to me anymore." Daniel Fienberg of HitFix summed it up thusly: "Wow. No, Greta Gerwig. No. I mean... Greta Gerwig's gotta eat. But... No."
Then again, as Esther Zuckerman points out on The Wire, "no one would be complaining if [Gerwig] ended up on HBO," making the backlash "unfair and snobbish." And on IndieWire, Alison Willmore points out that Gerwig "has spent eight years in the indie trenches," and we shouldn't "preemptively begrudge her a well-paid gig that will also raise her profile considerably." It's not fair, she notes, to assume that "taking on this project drains Gerwig of any interest as an actress." But even Zuckerman is a bit worried: CBS, after all, is the same network that took such promising film actresses as Anna Faris, Kat Dennings, Allison Janney, and Margo Martindale and put them in pretty bad sitcoms...
