It seems justice has finally been served on Cleveland's most horrific block. Ariel Castro's neighbor, Elias Acevedo Sr., has been sentenced to 445 years in prison without parole as part of a plea deal. As reported in October, the discovery of Castro's captives ultimately led police to clues in two more 1990s cold cases. A winding series of events eventually connected Acevedo to the 1995 disappearance of pregnant 18-year-old Christina Adkins, his cousin's girlfriend. He ultimately confessed to Adkins' murder, as well as the rape and murder of Pamela Pemberton, a neighbor, in 1994. But that wasn't all.
The Plain Dealer reports he also confessed to raping his sister-in-law (when she was 18 and pregnant), and raping his three daughters continually (the women consented to have their relationship with Acevedo revealed). His daughters gave what the Plain Dealer describes as "gut-wrenching statements," to Acevedo's sobs. Though he hadn't planned to speak, he eventually did, issuing an apology to the women and their families. "I can't describe the regret and shame I have for what I've done," he told them. "I wish I could bring your daughters back." (More Elias Acevedo stories.)
