Michael Schumacher underwent a second surgery last night, and the good news is that he's showing "surprising improvement," the AP reports. The bad news? Even that unexpected bump was modest, leaving him, in only "slightly better condition" in Reuters' telling. "We cannot say he is out of danger," the hospital's head anaesthetician told reporters. "We have won some time, but we must continue an hour-by-hour surveillance."

The head of neurosurgery explained that the operation had removed a large hematoma (meaning blood buildup) from Schumacher's brain, but "there are hematomes a little bit everywhere" that are not as large or accessible. Doctors won't speculate as to when they might be able to revive Schumacher from his induced coma, or as to how his condition will progress in general. (More Michael Schumacher stories.)
