A 24-year-old man went on a fire extinguisher-fueled rampage inside his alma mater yesterday that ultimately sent 10 people to the hospital, the New York Daily News reports. The unidentified man walked into the lobby of New York's Liberty High School Academy for Newcomers, asking to talk with one of his old teachers, but a guard wouldn't let him in. That's when he allegedly grabbed a fire extinguisher and started spraying it, overwhelming 17 students and guards at the Chelsea high school with fumes. Some of the students suffer from asthma and couldn't breathe, ABC 7 reports.
The man made it up to the fifth floor while spraying the fire extinguisher, but was ultimately tackled. The 10 hospitalized victims were all treated and released, and the suspect was taken to Bellevue Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. Officials say he was previously diagnosed with schizophrenia.
