TiVo's share price soared after an appeals court ruled that EchoStar Holding and Dish Network had been illegally using TiVo's "time-warp" recording software, the Wall Street Journal reports. TiVo has been trying to expand its business beyond set-top box making and into licensing its technology, which lets users pause, fast forward and rewind live TV programs.

Echostar said it was disappointed by the ruling, but emphasized that its customers wouldn't be affected because the company has already developed and deployed "next-generation" software for its DVRs. An expert said TiVo would now likely continue its strategy of going into partnership with some providers, while going after those who violated its software patent and wouldn't make a deal.
