The political leader of Hamas is putting Israel on notice: Prepare for another Palestinian uprising if economic and military conditions do not improve. "I warn and under 'warn' I put many red lines," Khaled Meshaal told a Palestinian newspaper. Citing recent Israeli incursions and a year-old Western aid embargo, he spoke of a "huge explosion."

Last month, Hamas forged an uneasy alliance with Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas' moderate Fatah faction. Meshaal spoke in Cairo, where he met with Abbas. "The current situation is heading in the direction of the conditions that prevailed in the late 1990s," Meshaal said. The al-Aqsa intifida, which began in 2000, claimed more than 1,000 Israelis.  (More Israel stories.)
