Astronauts' Thanksgiving: Pass the Irradiated Turkey

Just because they're about 200 miles above Earth doesn't mean that the two US astronauts aboard the International Space Station won't be able to dig in to a traditional Thanksgiving meal tomorrow, reports Florida Today. Think turkey, yams, green beans, asparagus, baked beans, cobbler, etc. Of course, this being space, "the smoked turkey is irradiated, the yams are thermostabilized, and the green beans are freeze-dried," writes Amanda Kooser at CNET. In the accompanying video, the astronauts don't seem to mind.

“Naturally, this stuff is not going to be quite the same as homemade and being fresh carved off the turkey,” says a NASA food manager. "We come as close as we can given the constraints that we have of no refrigerators and no freezers.” (More Thanksgiving stories.)
