Peru is experiencing "increased sightings of anomalous aerial phenomena," and it's ready to investigate. The country's air force is reopening the Department of Investigation of Anomalous Aerial Phenomena, an office established in 2001 to probe such sightings. It had been closed for five years, the Guardian reports. "Many people don't report UFO sightings because they fear they will be labeled mad or made fun of, but nowadays with new technology—cellphone videos, Facebook, Twitter—they can be much more open," says an air force official.
"This new office needs those people to come and report their sightings so we can open a file and, using their information, do the respective analysis." Experts from astronomers to meteorologists to sociologists will make up the investigative team. Nearby countries, including Chile, Brazil, and Argentina, have comparable offices. The official notes "regular sightings" of UFOs in Peru; villagers in central Peru observed mysterious spheres of light for days just a few weeks ago, for instance. "On a personal basis, it's evident to me that we are not alone in this world or universe," the official says. (More UFO stories.)
