Brazilian Teachers' Protest Turns Into Riot

Looks like Brazilian teachers are not to be messed with: Firebombs were thrown and buildings were attacked after marches by striking teachers and their supporters turned ugly in Rio de Janiero and Sao Paolo last night, the BBC reports. Around 20,000 people marched peacefully in Rio to protest low salaries for teachers and harsh police crackdowns on earlier demonstrations, but chaos broke out when the protest reached city hall, reports the Telegraph.

Police fired tear gas after demonstrators burned a bus, broke into banks, and dragged furniture into the street to form barricades. The protest by the teachers, who have been on strike for two months, comes amid a larger wave of anti-government protests in Brazil. "The country has the money to support or bring Olympiads and the World Cup. Where is the money for education, health, and everything else?" complained one teacher at the protest. (More riots stories.)
