The first conviction has come down in the fatal gang rape of a young woman in New Delhi, but the result will do little to satisfy the victim's supporters: The teen assailant is guilty of rape and murder, but he'll be free after three years in reform school, reports the Times of India. The unidentified assailant was 17 at the time of the 2012 bus assault, though the victim's family says he was the most vicious of her attackers, reports AP.
"He should be hanged irrespective of whether he is a juvenile or not," said the victim's mother after the verdict. "He should be punished for what he did to my daughter." Four of his accused accomplices are currently on trial and should get their verdicts next month. All face the death penalty as adults. A sixth man was found dead in his jail cell in March. The case has drawn attention to gang rapes in India, but high-profile assaults persist—with more recent victims including a photojournalist, an American, and a Swiss tourist. (More India stories.)
