We haven't heard the last word on Holden Caulfield, if a new documentary on JD Salinger is to be believed. The New York Times today reports that at least five new books could roll out as soon as 2015, including one tome, The Last and Best of the Peter Pans, that would be collected with new and existing stories about the Caulfields. The Family Glass would reportedly add five new stories to Salinger's Franny and Zooey protagonists. The revelations come via Salinger, a documentary set to debut Sept. 6; a companion book of the same name will be published Sept. 3.
Filmmaker Shane Salerno says Salinger, who died in 2010, left detailed instructions for the posthumous release of some of his work, the existence of which has been rumored in the past. Salinger's son, Matthew, earlier this year dismissed the documentary as lacking access to the reclusive author's very small inner circle. But Salerno points to stacks of unpublished photos and letters, and a diary of a lifelong Salinger friend, saying, “If that’s not the inner circle, I don’t know what is the inner circle."
