A week after a famed stuntman died jumping from a helicopter in a wingsuit, another daredevil has been killed attempting a similar feat. Mario Richard, a leading American base jumper, died while wingsuit flying in the Dolomites in Italy on Monday. He was 47. The New York Times says that the details of his death are still unclear, but local Italian media say he hit a cliff wall after jumping from a nearly 9,700-foot mountain, the Salt Lake Tribune reports. His body was recovered 450 feet below.
Richard's wife, professional rock climber Steph Davis, had successfully made the jump just before him. Along with Davis, Richard, Canadian by birth, ran a base-jumping company in Moab, Utah, offering amateur thrillseekers the chance to do tandem jumps with him. Richard told the Times last year that he had thus far performed some 7,000 sky dives and 2,000 base jumps. (The Times recently dug into the story of another "near-mythic" base jumper who died in a jump last year.)
