The hunt for a missing cell phone turned tragic this week when a man was crushed to death in what police are calling "a terrible accident." Roger Mirro, 56, was searching for a misplaced phone at his apartment in a Chicago suburb when he told his neighbor he thought it may have dropped down the garbage chute and asked for a key to the garbage room, the Chicago Tribune reports.
When Mirro's wife reported him missing after she got home four hours later—she had called to tell him she was going out with friends about half an hour before he visited the neighbor—police retraced the man's steps to find a ladder leaning beside the trash compactor and his mangled body inside, police say. The medical examiner's office has also ruled the death an accident. (More accidental death stories.)
