On NY School's Summer Reading List: 30+ Typos
Long Island's Hempstead Public Schools would like its students to read something called "The Great Gypsy" over summer break.   (Shutterstock)

Good news, students of Hempstead Public Schools: You won't be wading through F. Scott Fitzgerald's version of that Leo DiCaprio movie this fine summer vacation. Rather, you'll be searching endlessly for a tome called The Great Gypsy—at least according to the district's summer reading list, which Newsday points out contains a whopping 30-plus typos. Similarly, the school is recommending authors Emily Bonte, George Ornell, and David McCulloch in the list, which is for students in pre-K through "twelve grade."

Hempstead itself wasn't immediately commenting, but a rep for New York state's Board of Regents blamed a chaotic administration: "It indicates again that a stable administration is absolutely essential for kids to get the kind of education they need. Hempstead has not had a stable administration for a long time and the kids are suffering." (More Hempstead Public Schools stories.)
