There's More to Uncover in Gen. Allen Emails: Lawmaker

A member of the House Armed Services Committee is calling on Chuck Hagel to reopen the investigation into Gen. John Allen and his emails with socialite Jill Kelley, claiming the Pentagon never actually subpoenaed many of the private emails between the pair. California Democratic Rep. Jackie Speier says the investigation was little more than a white-wash, with only 41 of 3,000 emails between the pair over two years being thoroughly reviewed, USA Today reports. "I don't think I communicate with my husband by e-mail more than 150 times a year. That's a lot of e-mails," she says. "This is a four-star general in the middle of a war zone."

At best, she says, the investigation is incomplete. At worst, they were "intentionally not pursuing an investigation into whether or not there was an inappropriate relationship, secrecy, national-security breaches. Classified information." The Pentagon rejects those claims, saying the investigation was complete and Allen exonerated. Speier's accusations come just weeks after news that the late journalist Michael Hastings was reportedly working on a piece about a privacy lawsuit from Jill Kelley when he died in a car crash. Hours before his death, Hastings emailed his colleagues at Buzzfeed that he was onto a "big story" and warned them that "the Feds are interviewing my 'close friends and associates,'" and might pay them a visit.
