Most Americans Work on Vacation

A vacation doesn't necessarily mean time away from work, according to new research from software company Pertino. Not only do US employees—64% of men and 57% of women—get down to business on holiday, but (according to workers) 54% of bosses expect it. It's not just while lazing at home, either. More than a third of respondents said they've worked from the beach. Even bathroom stalls aren't safe: 31% said they did other business while on the commode.

So what does it mean for employees? More burnout, heavier strain on relationships, even diminished health, reports the Christian Science Monitor. Then again, 64% of respondents said that checking work email while on vacation actually helps them ease back into work after the holiday is over, LiveScience reports. "The Information Age has enabled unprecedented levels of employee productivity," Pertino's VP of marketing says. "It's all about setting whatever rhythm works for you." (More work stories.)
