We're hoping that Britons enjoyed Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee year—because it ran taxpayers about $1.4 million more than the year before. The long-reigning monarch's official bottom line expenses came in at $50.7 million, according to royal finances. Where did the additional money go? Mainly to the upkeep of royal buildings and staff, according to Sky News. The figure shows a "real terms reduction in expenditure on supporting the Queen's official duties," the Keeper of the Privy Purse says. A few breakdowns on royal spending, courtesy of the public coffers:
- Payroll: Rose from $26.6 million to $27.8 million
- Property maintenance: All those castles and country estates aren't cheap. They went from $13.5 million to $13.8 million.
- Travel: Fell from $7.6 million to $6.8 million.
