Hastings Email: 'I Need to Go Off the Radar'
Michael Hastings, an award-winning journalist and war correspondent, sent an email hours before his death saying that he needed 'to go off the radar for a bit.'   (AP Photo/Blue Rider Press/Penguin)

Michael Hastings emailed his BuzzFeed colleagues that "the Feds are interviewing my 'close friends and associates,'" reports Huffington Post, adding that he was onto "a big story, and need to go off the rada[r] for a bit." Fifteen hours later, Hastings was dead in a car crash that has conspiracy theorists talking. The email surfaced by way of Staff Sgt. Joseph Biggs, who had known Hastings since the journalist embedded with his unit in Afghanistan in 2008 and was BCCed on the email. “It alarmed me very much,” Biggs tells KTLA, which has a copy of the email (see it here). "I just said it doesn’t seem like him. I just had this gut feeling and it just really bothered me." Hastings was reportedly writing a piece about Jill Kelley; it's unclear if that's what he's referring to. (More Michael Hastings stories.)
