Trish Staine felt pretty crappy after running nine miles as part of her half-marathon training on Sunday. Thinking she was dealing with a pulled muscle or pinched nerve, she tried painkillers, baths, and laying down; nothing worked, and her husband finally called an ambulance the next day. Turns out Staine was in labor—odd, since she'd had no idea she was pregnant. "I said 'no, no, that's impossible,'" the 33-year-old told the AP from her hospital room, where she delivered baby girl Mira—short for Miracle—five weeks early at 6 pounds, 6 ounces.
There had been no kicking, no fetal movement, and Staine hadn't gained any weight. In fact, husband John tells the Duluth News Tribune his wife looked like she’d actually lost weight while training for a half-marathon on June 22—one she still plans to complete. "We paid for [the entry fee]. They’ve already cashed the check," her husband explains. The kicker: John, with whom Trish has two other kids, had had a vasectomy. His initial reaction: "Whose baby is that? It's not possible," he says. Adds Trish, "He's still in shock. Everybody is teasing him." (More marathon stories.)
