A pretty horrific story out of southern Israel today, where a man apparently became enraged after visiting the bank with the intention of taking care of a $1,640 debt—which failed to happen, reports Ynet: His request denied, he "came back with a pistol and shot dead four people ... bank employees and customers," per the country's Internal Security minister, who backed up Ynet's assertion, explaining that the man "sought cover for a debt, a loan, and did not get it." Reuters reports that he also tried the ATM during his morning visit, and was unable to get any cash. The man, himself believed to be ex-border police, killed himself as police stormed the building.
The incident was initially categorized as a robbery, and details remain murky; Reuters reports that police have speculated that the suspect knew his victims. A witness tells Ynet he took pains to verify each was dead: "He even checked the pulse of one of them." The AP notes that the Hapoalim Bank branch specializes in mortgages; police are investigating the man's financial situation and whether he had any personal issues with bank workers.
