Some groundbreaking research in the study of American society this week: New polling by Public Policy Polling has found just 16% of Americans have a favorable opinion of hipsters, while 42% view them unfavorably. The study does not define what, exactly, it considers a hipster to be. Other revelations:

  • Only 9% of Republicans have a favorable opinion of hipsters. At 18%, Democrats are twice as likely to view the ambiguous subculture favorably.
  • Half of voters aged 18 to 29 self-identify as hipsters, but only 10% of voters overall were willing to adopt the label.
  • 46% believe that hipsters "soullessly appropriate cultural tropes from the past for their own ironic amusement." However, 23% think they make a positive contribution to society.

  • Over a quarter would support a special tax on hipsters for being annoying.
  • 21% of voters think that PBR (which PPP identifies as the hipster beer of choice. Maybe in 2003, guys) is a good beer.
