Etta Mae Lopez wanted to quit smoking, so she did the usual: waited patiently outside a sheriff's office until a deputy came out and then slapped him across the face. And, ta-da, now she's in a smoke-free jail for 63 days, reports the AP. The 31-year-old Californian explained to the confused deputy that she wanted to get locked up to kick the habit, so she pleaded no contest to a charge of misdemeanor battery of a peace officer.
She figured "that the only way to quit smoking was to go to jail because they don't allow tobacco in the jail," the deputy tells the Sacramento Bee. "She waited all day for a deputy to come out because she knew if she assaulted a deputy she would be go to jail and be inside long enough to quit her smoking habit." (More strange stuff stories.)
