Andy Roddick was knocked out of the Australian Open today, losing a 4-hour, five-set epic to Philipp Kohlschreiber despite notching a personal best 42 aces. “It's the best that happened to me in tennis,” Kohlschreiber said of bouncing the sixth-seeded American. “I enjoyed every second.” Another upset rocked the women’s side, with Aussie Casey Dellacqua ousting 2006 champ Amelie Mauresmo.
Second-ranked Rafael Nadal and fourth-ranked Nikolay Davydenko had an easier time, cruising through in straight sets. For the women, top-ranked Justine Henin and last year’s top two, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, all won. Sharapova got off to a slow start, mired in a 3-3 tie with underdog Elena Vesnina, before wining nine straight games. (More tennis stories.)
