John Kerry will today meet with the parents of Anne Smedinghoff, the young diplomat killed earlier this month in Afghanistan while carrying textbooks from a military base to a school. The secretary of state is making a stop in Chicago as he returns from Japan, the AP reports. Smedinghoff was "wiped out by terrorism—the worst kind of nihilism. ... It doesn't stand for anything except killing people and stopping the future," said Kerry, who had met the 25-year-old two weeks prior to her death.
"And so we're not going to be deterred. We're going to be inspired. And we're going to use Anne's idealism as another motivation," he added, in remarks made in Tokyo. The AP notes that Kerry declared the protection of American foreign service officers his No. 1 priority when taking on the job in February; Smedinghoff's death is the first of an American diplomat since Ambassador Chris Stevens died in Benghazi.
