Following a Texas district attorney's shocking assassination, dozens of FBI agents today joined the investigation while armed guards stood outside the Kaufman County Courthouse, CNN reports. Fears that a white supremacist gang is targeting law enforcement officials spread even to Houston, where the chief prosecutor has gone under 24-hour protection. Authorities are investigating links between the murders of Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland, his assistant prosecutor Mark Hasse, and Colorado prison chief Tom Clements. In other developments:

  • A neighbor of the McLellands says he heard a possible attack happening early on Saturday. "It was five or six shots, one right after the other," he said.
  • While officials see links between the McLelland and Hasse killings, police recovered .223-caliber shell casings at the former but none at the latter, the New York Times reports. An official said Hasse's killer may have been a more experienced assassin from the same group.
  • More is emerging on the history of McLelland's office and the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, a "whites-only" prison gang. His prosecutors conducted a multi-year racketeering investigation that indicted 34 alleged Brotherhood members last year, including four leaders. A prosecutor called it a "devastating blow" and warned that the gang used violence against "those who ... pose a threat to the enterprise."
