By the end of February, plenty of signs pointed to an Ashley Judd run for Senate in her native Kentucky, but it wasn't to be. So what happened? According to former Kentucky state treasurer/Judd adviser Jonathan Miller, a small number of "anti-Ashley" Kentucky Democrats helped edge her out of the race by pulling a fast one on the mainstream media. These Democrats wanted Kentucky's secretary of state, Alison Lundergan Grimes, to go up against Mitch McConnell, and they planted two big false stories in their quest to make that happen, Miller writes for the Daily Beast.
The first was that Judd made this much-decried comment at a dinner party: "I have been raped twice, so I think I can handle Mitch McConnell." (Miller was there and says the line was never uttered.) The second was that Bill Clinton wanted her out so Grimes could run. (Miller explains the president and actress are quite close, and while ABC News "ultimately cleared up the record," the storyline had been set.) Miller actually pities Grimes, he writes, because McConnell will probably slay her if she does enter the race. "I imagine McConnell sitting back, watching the antics with his sly, tight grin, enjoying how a small group of Democrats duped the so-called liberal media into creating the false narrative of a Democratic civil war," Miller writes.
