George Washington's 'Bad' Whiskey Going on Sale

Mount Vernon is making 1,100 bottles of rye whiskey using a recipe from none other than George Washington himself. The booze will go on sale next month for $95 a bottle, reports AP. Must be great stuff, right? Eh, "what the liquor peddlers at Mount Vernon aren’t telling you is, back in the day, the Founding Father’s whiskey was rotgut at best," writes Brian Abrams at DeathandTaxes.

Abrams dug up an old article in American History explaining that Washington used his neighbor's extra grain to make "very bad rye whiskey." The AP says the stuff coming out in April uses the same recipe and is the "most authentic version of Washington's whiskey available." For better or worse, apparently. (More George Washington stories.)
