Christopher Dorner's life on the lam might finally be over. Police raided the mountainside cabin where the fugitive had holed up, and authorities say "charred human remains" were discovered after the cabin was torched, the New York Times reports, adding that they are very likely Dorner's. Still, police plan a forensic identification. The raid near Big Bear, Calif., came after a furious gunfight in which one deputy was killed and another wounded, reports the Los Angeles Times, bringing to four the number of people believed to have been killed by the fugitive. TV news footage showed the cabin engulfed in flames, reports CNN, and police reported hearing a single gunshot from inside as they closed in.

Today's developments got their start when two people—reports have conflicted on whether they were a married couple or maids—entered a cabin that was supposed to be empty and instead encountered Dorner, who tied them up and fled in a car stolen from the cabin. One of the two managed to call police, who were soon on the lookout. Dorner apparently ditched that first car at one point and stole another, and he had two separate chases with Fish and Wildlife officers. Eventually he crashed and fled by foot into the second cabin in the San Bernardino mountains. "Hundreds of rounds" of gunfire were exchanged in about a half-hour, police say, and that's apparently when the two deputies were hit. The wounded deputy does not have life-threatening injuries.
