It seems there's nothing about Girls a conservative would enjoy: creator Lena Dunham is a card-carrying member of the Obama faction, and the HBO show features no references to religion or traditional morality (nor any Republican characters). But if conservatives are going to complain about the state of our culture, they can't just ignore shows like Girls. In fact, they should be watching such shows, argues Kurt Schlichter on Breitbart.com. Only by doing so can they join in the conversation about our culture—which is currently "a cesspool"—and ultimately "act to change it."

By remaining safely within the cocoon of rightwing media and family-friendly entertainment, conservatives are basically shutting themselves in "a closed loop echo chamber," Schlichter argues. That's why many—himself included—were so surprised when Mitt Romney lost the election. "By not participating [in non-conservative media], you miss the larger discussions that pop cultural events outside your safety sphere spawn. You cede the culture to the liberals, and we’ve seen how that’s played out." Instead, conservatives should be working to take over "the reins of pop culture." Click for Schlichter's full column.
