Staff members at the liberal website Wonkette went trolling on The Atlasphere—a dating site for Ayn Rand enthusiasts—in the hope of finding "the wackiest, most completely out-there profiles we could find," writes Doctor Zoom. But they were shocked to find rather down-to-Earth folk rather than the "outrageously a--holish profiles in general-purpose dating sites like OKCupid." Still, a few excerpts captured an intensity for the Randian worldview:
- "Virtues I recognize, earn and revere include rationality, truth, self-interest, self-confidence, originality of thought, creativity, productivity, justice. … I hate altruism, dishonesty, irrationality and hypocrisy." What's more, "I am a real person because I have rational thought."
- One calls herself "Liberty5-3000" in search of her own "Equality 7-2521" (characters from Rand's Anthem). She sympathizes with people "who believe in the socialist state, when I destroy them in argument." And she has "been called 'racist' and 'heartless,' but I just figure these labels are appropriate for someone who has an actual sense of justice."
- Dr Zoom's favorite is a New Jersey resident seeking a "sensitive" woman: "Sensitive means ensuring one’s behaving rationally towards others and expecting others to behave rationally towards you." And she must be passionate, which means "discovering the objective values one’s life requires and taking the rational actions necessary to achieve them."
But all in all, Dr Zoom found them surprisingly "boring." Click for the
