The victim of a gang-rape in New Delhi continues to fight for her life at a Singapore hospital, but things are looking increasingly grim. By late today, the young woman's condition had "taken a turn for the worse" and her vital signs had deteriorated with indications of severe organ failure, said the hospital's CEO. "This is despite doctors fighting for her life including putting her on maximum artificial ventilation support, optimal antibiotic doses, as well as stimulants which maximize her body's capability to fight infections," he said. Family members are by her side.
"The patient is currently struggling against the odds, and fighting for her life," he added. The 23-year-old had earlier suffered a heart attack, a lung and abdominal infection, and "significant" brain injury, according to the hospital. Media reports have said that her assailants beat her and inserted an iron rod into her body during the assault, resulting in severe organ damage. Meanwhile, another woman who reported a gang-rape last month has committed suicide. (More gang rape stories.)
