The Nor'easter threatening the already-battered Atlantic Coast is weakening, but New York and New Jersey are still ordering evacuations ahead of the storm, which is already pelting Washington with ice and stirring seas as high as 7.5 feet off New York. In New York City, parks and beaches have been closed, construction halted, and 770 flights canceled; those in nursing homes and low-lying waterfront areas have been ordered to evacuate in New York and New Jersey. The effects of Sandy are still being felt—fuel rationing is still in effect in New Jersey, and many still have no power or no heat—and authorities are trying to deal with tens of thousands of tons of debris, which could turn into projectiles during the new storm. Another fear: The Nor'easter could down already-weakened trees and limbs, which could lead to more power outages. AccuWeather reports that snow is expected from Maryland to Maine today and tomorrow (as much as six inches in places); other concerns include high winds, possible flooding, and icy roads.
