Barack Obama has won a second term as president after taking Ohio, the AP reports. Though Mitt Romney won the battleground state of North Carolina along with a number of deep red states, the president's victory in Ohio eliminated any chance of a Romney win. Obama thanked his supporters on Twitter when news agencies called the state: "We're all in this together. That's how we campaigned, and that's who we are. Thank you. -bo" Obama led the electoral vote 303-206 with only Florida (29) still outstanding. (Read about his victory speech here, and Romney's concession speech here.)
If you're wondering why Ohio was handed to Obama even though about 25% of votes were still uncounted and Obama was ahead by less than a percentage point, the Wall Street Journal has an answer for you: "The counties in which Mr. Obama is leading have a lot more uncounted votes than the counties that have supported Mitt Romney. So Mr. Obama's lead is more likely to widen than narrow." The popular vote, as opposed to the electoral vote, is tight, but the Times' Nate Silver thinks Obama will win that as well once the West Coast ballots are counted. (More Election 2012 stories.)
