The massive Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which kicks off Monday, is trying to beat its seriously "ungreen" rep by buying carbon offsets for the equivalent of 2.3 million gallons of gasoline it takes to power the extravaganza, the size of 35 football fields. It will also showcase energy-saving products, TVs with fewer toxic chemicals, and recycled cellphones, the Washington Post reports.

The carbon offsets won't compensate for the airplane flights used to get 14,000 people to the show, but CES officials estimate that the deal-making and networking at the event saves attendees 156,000 miles of additional air travel. Focus at the show, the Post says, will be on partnerships between hardware manufacturers and content creators and distributors. (More Consumer Electronics Show stories.)
