Mitt Romney picked up a potentially valuable newspaper endorsement today, one that might do a bit to help blunt President Obama's constant attacks on him for opposing the auto bailout. The Detroit News threw its weight behind Romney, praising his resume of business success and bipartisan deal-making. "Romney has been an effective leader his entire career," the editors write. "We are optimistic he can restore the art of compromise to Washington."
"Don't assume that it was a no-brainer for a conservative newspaper to endorse a conservative presidential candidate," the editors continue, thanking Obama for the auto bailout. "Had Obama done as well with the rest of the economy, it would be hard to deny him a second term." But the rest of the economy is floundering, and "despite his wrong-headedness on the auto bailout, we believe Romney when he proclaims himself a 'car guy.' He is indeed a son of Detroit."
