Politics / Iowa caucuses Huckabee Wins Iowa Easily Over Romney Strong support from evangelicals gives him a quick victory By John Johnson, Newser Staff Posted Jan 4, 2008 2:50 AM CST Copied Republican presidential hopeful, former Arkansas Gov. (AP Photo/Paul Sancya) (Associated Press) Mike Huckabee won yesterday's Iowa caucuses thanks to a surge of support from evangelical voters. The former Arkansas governor and Baptist preacher defeated second-place finisher Mitt Romney with relative ease, despite being outspent 4 to 1, the New York Times notes. Fred Thompson held a slim lead over John McCain for the third spot, with Ron Paul not far behind. Rudy Giuliani, who didn't campaign in Iowa, trailed the pack at sixth. More than 8 of 10 who supported Huckabee identified themselves as evangelicals. "Congratulations on the first round to Mike," said Romney on Fox News. But he noted that the campaign for the GOP nomination still had far to go. Huckabee, who ranked at the bottom of the polls a scant two months ago, will have little time to relish his victory; the primary in New Hampshire is Tuesday. (More Iowa caucuses stories.)
