Family, Dog Reunited After 5 Years

Shakira the Siberian Husky went missing from her Georgia home almost five years ago, but she was just reunited with her owners thanks to a $15 microchip, reports the Chicago Tribune. Shakira turned up at a Georgia animal shelter, where she might have been euthanized, and from there arrived at the Free Spirit Siberian Husky Rescue in Illinois on August 11. Free Spirit had an adoption set up for the dog it called "Kathy" when the organization discovered the Husky's microchip, and its founder called county officials to set up the reunion.

Owner Heather Jackson was so happy, she and her brother arranged to drive 700 miles overnight to the McHenry County Animal Control to pick up the 6-year-old dog. Immediately after getting Shakira, Jackson drove the 14 hours back so that she could go to work—and, of course, reunite her three children with their dog. (More missing dog stories.)
