If you want to work for the city of Delray Beach, Florida, you better quit your nicotine habit first. A new policy prohibiting the city from hiring employees who regularly smoke or use other tobacco products went into effect this week, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports. The decision was made to save money, as smokers can cost their employers as much as $12,000 per year, thanks to costs related to health and disability. Tobacco-using employees who had already been hired are exempt from the new policy. (More smokers stories.)
