Things are changing over at 30-year-old USA Today, which will launch a major redesign of its newspaper tomorrow and its website on Saturday, reports AdAge. Both will become more colorful and modern-looking (read: more like a mobile app), but the changes aren't just for the readers. Gannett wants to offer a new medium for advertisers in the digital age. Readers using the paper's website will see clicked-on stories float forward from the background. Ideally, they'll scroll through articles using arrows, eventually encountering a full-page ad. Also: No paywall.
The print edition will have more photos and graphics, and its TV listings will include web-based programming from YouTube and Hulu. The paper also is changing the way its journalists write stories: It wants them to let their voices shine through in articles, since readers get a glimpse of their personality via social media channels already. Gannett plans to employ similar redesigns at its other 80 newspapers. (More USA Today stories.)
