The black CNN camerawoman who got pelted with peanuts by a pair of attendees at the GOP convention—they said something like, "This is what we feed animals"—tells the Maynard Institute that she is "not surprised at all." Patricia Carroll explains that she is a 34-year-old Alabama native well aware she's in Florida. "You come to places like this, you can count the black people on your hand. They see us doing things they don't think I should do."
Carroll made a point not to single out Republicans for blame, saying the same thing could just as easily happen at the Democratic convention—or on any random street corner. "I'm a proud black woman," she says, adding that the incident "should be a wake-up call" for African-Americans. "People were living in euphoria for a while. People think we've gone further than we have." Read the interview here. (More Patricia Carroll stories.)
