A gunman, a police officer, and a male civilian are dead in a shooting this afternoon near Texas A&M University, reports KHOU. Police say Thomas Cafall, 35, gunned down 41-year-old constable Brian Bachmann while the officer tried to serve an eviction notice at a small house in College Station, Texas. Cafall then fired on other officers responding to the attack. "The officers defended themselves and called in additional officers," said Asst. Chief Scott McCollum. The gunfight lasted for "an extended period of time," he said.
Three officers suffered non-life-threatening injures at the scene, and a female civilian wounded in the gunfight is undergoing surgery. Police tried to revive Bachmann with CPR, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital. "Brian Bachmann was very close to everyone in law enforcement," said McCollum. "He was a pillar in this community and it's sad and tragic that we lost him today." See a news report by KBTX at the Dallas Morning News. (More Texas A&M Aggies stories.)
