Paul Ryan may be a budget expert and domestic policy wonk, but a huge responsibility of the executive branch is foreign policy, and critics are already landing punches on Ryan's meager resume on international issues, reports Reuters. "I think his (Ryan's) experience as a vice presidential candidate is thin; or for a future president and commander-in-chief, it's virtually absent," said Tim Roemer, a former ambassador and congressman.
But Ryan's defenders say that Ryan's experience in that department is no different than Barack Obama's in 2008. And with this election cycle dominated by the economy, domestic issues are what voters are most concerned about. Despite Ryan's reputation as a brutal cost cutter, he has kept his scissors well clear of the Pentagon, even putting more money in the military's budget by finding cuts in other areas. "My sense is that Ryan is just a generic Republican on foreign policy," said one political analyst. (More Paul Ryan stories.)
