Of all the grim stories coming out of Detroit, this one from the AP might be the bleakest of all:
- "Abandoned and neglected parts of the city are quickly becoming dumping grounds for the dead—at least a dozen bodies in 12 months' time," writes Corey Williams. "And authorities acknowledge there's little they can do."
The problem is that vast swaths of the city are now vacant, and few people have reason to venture into those areas, including police. "You can shoot a person, dump a body, and it may just go unsolved" because of the delay in finding the corpse, says one city officer. In fact, some of the victims are believed to have been killed elsewhere and dumped in Detroit for just that reason. Read the full story here. (More Detroit stories.)
