World / Carl Lewis Carl Lewis on Romney Gaffe: He Should 'Stay Home' Olympic legend joins the crowd pummeling Romney for criticizing games By Kevin Spak, Newser Staff Posted Jul 27, 2012 11:36 AM CDT Copied In this July 29, 1996 file photo, gold medalist Carl Lewis reacts during the medal presentation ceremony for the men's long jump at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky, File) Mitt Romney got yet another high-profile tongue-lashing for having the effrontery to suggest that London wasn't ready for the Olympics—while in London. "Every Olympics is ready, I don't care whatever he said," nine-time US gold medalist Carl Lewis told the Independent. "I swear, sometimes I think some Americans shouldn't leave the country. Are you kidding me, stay home if you don't know what to say." Romney's remarks have also drawn a rebuke from the Mayor of London, who lambasted the presidential candidate in front of 60,000 people, and from Prime Minister David Cameron. "Of course it's easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere," Cameron said, a shot at the Romney-run Salt Lake City Olympics, according to Deseret News. Romney has since backtracked on his London comments. Click for more on Romney's gaffe-laden London trip, and why it's helping Obama. (More Carl Lewis stories.) Report an error
