After her final treatment for leukemia, 4-year-old McKenna May of Ohio learned she'd earned a trip to Disney World from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. But even after battling cancer for half her life, she lost out on the trip—because her dad refused to sign off on it, reports the Sentinel-Journal of Bowling Green. William May of Toledo says the foundation should grant wishes only to kids who have six months to live, not those who, like his daughter, appear to be cured.
McKenna's mother disagrees, as do foundation officials, who say McKenna's two brutal years of treatment more than make her eligible. Mom Whitney Hughes has now placed collection jars at local businesses to raise money for a new trip, though the goal of $3,500 is still far off. May was not present for many of his daughter's treatments, though he says Hughes prevented him from being there. Still, he insists it's not ill will that made him refuse, even if his mother-in-law isn't buying it. "He's just doing this to get back," she said. (More leukemia stories.)
